6 Vaccinated Indiana Nursing Home Residents Get COVID, Less Than Half of Staff Inoculated

Six fully vaccinated residents at an Indiana nursing home, contracted COVID-19, with less than half of the staff inoculated against the virus, the Associated Press reported

Howard County Health Officer Dr. Emily Backer told AP that a total of seven residents died from COVID-19, including one who was fully vaccinated. The five other fully vaccinated residents were among 11 others that got COVID-19 at the facility from an outbreak that officials believe began in mid-June. Backer said 44 percent of the staff is fully vaccinated.

She said the staff's vaccination rate was "lower than we'd like. But at this point, they can't force them."

Across the U.S., around 59 percent of nursing homes staff are inoculated against COVID-19, compared to 80 percent of residents, according to Medicare.
