The book is set in Dublin, 1918 and revolves around Nurse Julia Power, who works at an understaffed hospital in the city centre, where expectant mothers come down with an unfamiliar flu and are quarantined together. The nurses lose patients to this mysterious pandemic, but they also propel new life into a fearful world with their kindness.
